  • Espy Cafe, located at 404 W. Huron St., opened on Jan. 10 after a five-year transformation of a former metal shop, built & managed by local workers. The cafe serves food and coffee and uses a democratically run model where staff help co-own the business.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ann Arbor author Lynn Baldwin released her children’s picture book 'My Backyard Used to Be' to celebrate Michigan’s 189th birthday on Jan. 26. The book traces a local backyard’s history from farm to modern day and launched at Schuler Books in Westgate Shopping Center, and is available online.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Michigan interim President Domenico Grasso urged the campus community to honor 19-year-old Lucas Mattson, whose body was found on Jan. 24 on Cambridge Road after a 20-hour search by Ann Arbor PD and UM Public Safety, with an autopsy planned to determine his cause of death.  MLive
  • The Dexter School Board seeks candidates to fill trustee Brian Arnold’s vacancy after his Jan 31 resignation to focus on personal and professional priorities, with applications accepted Feb 1 to 13 via email or in person at Bates School and interviews set for Feb 19 following a Feb 2 informational session.  MLive
