CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ University of Michigan’s William L. Clements Library in Ann Arbor hosts Revolutionary Paine, an exhibit open (noon to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday through May 8) that honors the 250th anniversary of Paine’s Common Sense first published in 1776. Undergraduate students curated the exhibit to offer fresh insights on early America. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The Ann Arbor campus of the University of Michigan received a record 115,125 applications (a 29% increase) for fall 2026, with higher numbers from first-generation and international students. Classes start Aug. 31 and enrollment details will come in October. MLive
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ On Thursday, Feb. 26, a red-tailed hawk was spotted carrying an animal carcass (likely a squirrel) between Shapiro Library and West Hall on campus as about 10 students paused to take pictures. The bird later flew southwest. MLive
- ➤ Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner’s Office announced controlled ecological burns will begin in coming weeks at several Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti sites to help native ecosystems. Burns will be scheduled each morning based on temperature, humidity & wind conditions. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ TheRide secured nearly $8M in federal funding (including $7.2M from competitive grants and $750K in congressional spending) to build a new transit center in Ypsilanti. Detailed design is underway, and construction will begin in 2027 with completion expected by the end of 2028. MLive
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Nearly 60,000 pounds of frozen blueberries have been recalled by the FDA due to a listeria risk; the recalled product was distributed in Michigan, Oregon, Washington, Wisconsin, and Canada. The Salem-based company issued the recall on Feb. 12 and the FDA upgraded the risk level on Feb. 24 (Class I). ClickOnDetroit.com
