CULTURE NEWS

  • Thunder Over Michigan Air Show returns this summer—July 17-19 at Willow Run Airport—to mark America’s 250th anniversary with flyovers by the USAF F-16 Viper Demo Team and demos by additional military aircraft.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor’s Echelon Kitchen & Bar chef Joseph VanWagner will lead an 8‐night culinary tour in County Cork, Ireland from Aug. 13 to Aug. 21 for 12 guests at $9,500 per person. The trip includes stays at Ballymaloe House Hotel and Inish Beg Estate and hands‐on food experiences.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor will start accepting registrations next week for summer and fall 2026 semesters; returning students register on March 11 while new students sign up on March 12, with summer classes beginning May 11 and fall courses starting August 31.  MLive
  • UM engineering dean Karen Thole will leave on May 14 to become inaugural director at Penn State’s new National Security Institute + UM will announce details soon for the search of her replacement.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Washtenaw County Board approved a temporary appropriation of $432,125 on Wed, March 4 to support local housing programs facing upcoming federal funding delays; the move protects nearly 200 residents from immediate homelessness risk and requires eligible programs to submit budgets plus notify if HUD awards funds.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Michigan reported 46 student deaths from July 1, 2020 through January on campus—lower than the nearly 200 statistically expected from CDC rates—and noted that student Lucas Mattson, found dead Jan. 24 near campus, is under investigation.  MLive
  • Negotiations between Blue Cross Blue Shield and Michigan Medicine face a June 30 deadline and could disrupt patient care starting July 1 if no deal is reached. Families are concerned over rising costs and uncertainty, while both parties insist on focusing on patients (details remain under discussion).  ClickOnDetroit.com

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Townie Homes will bring new affordable housing in Ann Arbor using a $5 million tax-capture plan by a community land trust. The project covers 10 sites for 26 homes priced from $125K to $325K to serve local public servants and workers.  MLive
  • Four affordable housing units in a high-rise behind the Michigan Theater remain empty after more than a year because high monthly rents ($1,701) and extra fees deter many applicants. The city's Office of Community and Economic Development said these units attract fewer takers than lower-cost options at other properties.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ranked third Michigan Wolverines made history with a 71 to 68 win over Iowa on March 5, finishing their road slate at 11 to 0 in Big Ten play. They will host Michigan State at Crisler Arena at 4:30 p.m. Sunday.  All About Ann Arbor
