COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ann Arbor announced that construction will begin the week of March 24 on a new pedestrian tunnel under the railroad tracks to link Bandemer Park and Barton Nature Area and is expected to be complete by fall. Barriers and posted signs will restrict access during work—temporary closures of a pedestrian bridge and parking area may change travel routes.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor will host several spring events as UMix’s end-of-year celebration on April 4 closes Jefferson Street from Maynard to Thomson and MUSIC Matters SpringFest on April 11 brings live concerts along State and North University avenues. The UM Alumni Association will hold the Forever Go Blue Bash on April 16 at Ingalls Mall—while The Event on Main is set for June 19 with street closures for live music, food and drinks.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Families and neighbors attended an open house on Thursday to review plans for rebuilding Lawton Elementary School on the southwest side of Ann Arbor; the design adds outdoor playspaces near Lawton Park. The project will break ground in 2026 and finish in 2028 — part of Ann Arbor Public Schools’ next phase of a $1 billion capital bond — to protect children at play and reduce muddy fields.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Arbor Hills Landfill in Salem Township (10690 Six Mile Road) is set to reach capacity (in about five years), and its proposed expansion has sparked debate as locals express environmental and operational concerns.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan’s men’s basketball team survived a scare from UC San Diego and will face Texas A&M today for a chance to advance to the Sweet 16—Texas A&M beat Yale 80-71 and is counting on a deep bench to strengthen its play.   MLive
  • Michigan’s football program held its pro day Friday where former Wolverines like Mason Graham, Kenneth Grant, Will Johnson and Colston Loveland worked out before NFL scouts—players talked about overcoming injuries, pursuing draft goals and praised five-star freshman Bryce Underwood’s energy.  MLive
