ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Local police and road officials in Pittsfield Township are reviewing pedestrian safety at Carpenter Road intersections after two pedestrians died for not obeying signals (one died on Jan. 6th, 2024 near an Aldi and the other on March 5th, 2024 at the Packard and Carpenter roads intersection) as they work with the Washtenaw County Road Commission and MDOT to decide if more changes are needed. BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Local businesses in Ann Arbor and Washtenaw County saw changes as Seva asked for help after closing its Detroit branch and Bonchon Korean Fried Chicken opened near Woodland Plaza. New openings include Tabe downtown, Stimulatte Café near Ypsilanti, DropTop Pizza in Saline, Chelsea Party Loft and a sandwich tournament at Zingerman’s Deli—showing a growing local business scene. - ➤ Red Hawk Bar and Grill, a popular restaurant on State Street, will close on Saturday, May 3 (after 33 years in service) because rising food costs and the coronavirus pandemic have made it too hard to operate. The owners thanked customers for their support throughout the years. MLive
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Metro Detroit held Oberon Day celebrations yesterday with events in Ann Arbor + more festivities will occur later this week such as a launch party on Friday, March 28 and a Pistons game celebration. These events mark the unofficial start of summer for the region. WXYZ
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The southbound lane of Packard Street between Marlborough Drive and Pine Valley Boulevard closed at 9 a.m. Monday, March 24 and will remain shut until 5 p.m. Friday, March 28 for underground utility work. Drivers traveling south will follow a detour (via East Stadium Boulevard, South Industrial Highway, and East Eisenhower Parkway) while residential access and bike routes stay open. MLive
- ➤ Ann Arbor approved a $5.3 million contract with Cadillac Asphalt LC on March 17 to resurface 8.4 lane miles across 23 local streets and three major roads while adding asphalt paths along Eisenhower Parkway and State Street—officials said traffic calming devices will be installed on Bird Road, Arella Boulevard, Henry Street, Mershon Drive and Worden Avenue. Separate projects will soon start with an $8.6 million overhaul of Miller Avenue to add a two-way bikeway and a $19 million upgrade in Pittsfield Village that requires removal of a large oak tree—city officials say the changes are needed to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians. - ➤ Outgoing senior Jordan Hobbs said that freshmen Mila Holloway, Olivia Olson, and Syla Swords can lead Michigan to the Final Four and a Big Ten title if they stay on the roster — he described them as a special group — after they combined for over 42 points per game in the Big Ten tournament. Coach Kim Barnes Arico now faces the challenge of retaining the trio as the transfer portal opens Monday. MLive
- ➤ Michigan, a 5 seed, and Auburn, the No. 1 overall seed, will play in the Sweet 16 on Friday at State Farm Arena—tipoff is at 9:39 p.m. on CBS. MLive
- ➤ Michigan and Michigan State reached the Sweet 16 in Atlanta — each team needs one win to meet in the Elite Eight for the first time in the NCAA tournament. Michigan will play Auburn on Friday — a game that will put local fans in Ann Arbor on alert for what could be a historic matchup. MLive
