CRIME NEWS

  • Mohamed Kaba (19) was sentenced by Washtenaw County Trial Court Judge Jinan Hamood on March 31 to one year of probation and 27 days in jail (with credit for time served) after police found a 3D-printed firearm during a traffic stop on Oct. 12th, 2024 at North Maple Road in Ann Arbor.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ann Arbor Hash Bash organizers announced that the John Sinclair Foundation and Coin Theaters Inc. will produce a documentary about late poet and marijuana activist John Sinclair—whose 10-year prison sentence for marijuana possession spurred the legalization movement and led to the creation of Hash Bash in the 1970s.  MLive
  • Ypsilanti Township City Council approved a plan to fix Woodlawn Cemetery on Huron River Drive south of Ford Lake; for 60 years the old Black cemetery has been overgrown so many grave markers have sunk underground. The work will use LiDAR and Ground-Penetrating Radar (57 burials are known) and a Veterans Affairs program (to restore veteran markers) and is expected to take a year and a half.  All About Ann Arbor

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ann Arbor Public Schools began construction on new Mitchell and Dicken elementary schools and started modernizing Slauson Middle School as part of its $1 billion capital bond project. Groundbreaking at Mitchell occurred on Oct. 17 at 3550 Pittsview Drive—rebuild dates for two additional schools have not yet been set.  MLive
  • The University of Michigan Alumni Association ended its LEAD Scholars program on March 21—current LEAD students will not face any financial changes. The program gave merit-based scholarships for leadership and diversity as part of the effort to comply with federal and state guidelines.  MLive
  • In April, the Ann Arbor School Board changed how it accepts public comments by requiring speakers to address the meeting in person and by removing board designations from student and minority groups; local residents criticized the change. The board ended the practice of reading write-in comments that had been used during the pandemic.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor drivers will face multiple road closures as the eastbound M-14 ramp to southbound U.S. 23 closes from 6 a.m. Saturday, April 5 until 5 a.m. Monday for maintenance — Church Street near the 17-story Rambler Ann Arbor development closes for three weeks starting Monday, April 7 for underground utility installation. Other local streets also have restrictions that will affect commute times over the coming weeks.  MLive
  • Scio Township officials said the lease for a historic 1930s barn ends May 25, leaving its future uncertain. They may either renew the lease or repurpose the barn for storage—officials worry the leaking roof could lead to more damage.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Haverhill on Clark has opened its first building with 118 affordable apartments in Pittsfield Township between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti to help residents earning at or below 60% of the median income (rent ranges from $794 to $1,712) while a second building will be completed this summer (bringing the total to 295 units).  MLive
