CRIME NEWS

  • A man suspected of robbing an Ann Arbor Kroger in two back-to-back incidents, Brandon Leroy Carter (30), was arraigned for unarmed robbery on Feb. 1 and will appear in court on April 17 for a probable cause hearing.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Linda Siglin (80) was known as the face of The Ark for many years as she helped bring live music to Ann Arbor until her unexpected death on March 16th; a celebration of her life will be held on April 19th at 1 p.m. at The Ark (316 S. Main St.).  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tabbye Chavous will become the new executive director for the American Educational Research Association on Aug. 11 after leaving her role as the University of Michigan's chief diversity officer nearly two weeks after cuts to DEI offices and programs on March 27—her final day at UM is still not set.  MLive
  • Burns Park Elementary’s century—old building remains standing while improvements will take place around it— part of a district plan that uses community input to design new schools.  MLive
  • U.S. News released its medical school rankings on April 8, noting that about 20% of the top 100 research and primary care schools did not participate in the survey. Michigan schools received mixed results with Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine ranking second for primary care graduates and the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor placed at 119 for graduates practicing in primary care (some key details were not provided).  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor officials set a 35-foot, three-story cap for low-rise developments after City Council voted 8-3 on Monday, April 7 to ask the Planning Commission to review the limit — and Mayor Christopher Taylor said he hopes the resolution recalibrates the conversation — as local neighborhoods expect clearer guidelines.  MLive
  • U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell said she was disturbed when ICE forcefully detained a U.S. citizen, one of her constituents, outside a Michigan courthouse on April 7—she called the detainment based on race horrific and harmful to community safety.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan defensive back Rod Moore did not practice today as he works to recover from a torn ACL that kept him out of the 2024 season—his coach said he is very close to returning for the 2025 season. His team hopes he will rejoin them in time for summer training and preseason camp.  MLive
  • Michigan head coach Dusty May reshaped his basketball roster for 2025-26 by adding three transfers—one being the nation’s top-ranked forward from UAB who is weighing an early pro option. Michigan football spring practices highlighted five-star quarterback Bryce Underwood and promising defensive players.  MLive
