COMMUNITY NEWS

  • North Star Reach camp north of Ann Arbor received $250,000 matching gift from The Ted and Jane Von Voigtlander Foundation to support 2026 programs for children with health challenges. The donation — part of the 10th anniversary as the Year of Mooseness — will double community contributions for camp programs.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Michigan Gilbert and Sullivan Society is staging The MacAdo or The Town of Balleydew, a Scottish twist on the classic comic opera, at Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre from April 9 through April 12. A panel discussion is set for 5 p.m. April 11 (Conference Room 4, Michigan League).  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Michigan placed third among graduate schools on the Peace Corps Top Volunteer-Producing Colleges list, with 10 alumni serving in countries including Colombia and Kenya last fiscal year. The university has ranked fourth all-time with 2,851 volunteers since 1961 and the ranking was announced in an April 9 email.  MLive
  • Two Michigan law schools were ranked among the top 70 nationally by U.S. News and World Report on Tuesday, Apr. 7. The University of Michigan Law School is at No. 9 while Wayne State University is at No. 62.  MLive
  • University of Michigan faculty committee elected new leaders on April 6, with Kentaro Toyama as chair and Kirsten Herold as vice chair for a two-year term beginning May 1 (ending April 30, 2027). They replace previous officeholders in a vote that faced no opposition.  MLive
  • Luna, an incoming doctoral student at Michigan, developed MGuide, a digital map to help students find empty classrooms, transit routes, and accessible campus features. The tool is praised for its user-friendly design and will be refined this fall for better campus navigation.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Washtenaw County Conservation District is asking residents to complete a survey on concerns such as farmland preservation, invasive species management and water quality until June 15, with responses guiding future conservation and resource allocation efforts & supporting education on waste reduction.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lodi Township mourns the death of longtime supervisor Jan Godek (79), who served over 30 years until her passing on April 2; township flags were lowered and Jacob Schaible was appointed interim supervisor with a November election set for a two-year partial term.  MLive
  • Zion Lutheran Church will host a free forum on Saturday, April 18 at 1501 W. Liberty St. starting at 8:30 a.m. followed by two panel discussions from 9 to 12:30 that will address Ann Arbor’s affordable housing challenges + new proposals from local officials.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Catholic League unveiled its list of 10 top girls soccer players to watch in the upcoming spring season, highlighting local talents from Ann Arbor Greenhills, Bloomfield Hills Marian, and Dearborn Divine Child. League teams hope to break a state title drought dating back to 2022 as they prepare for competition.  MLive
  • The Associated Press and Michigan Sports Writers announced the 2026 all-state boys basketball team for Michigan high schools. The team honors include Player and Coach of the Year along with first and second team selections and honorable mentions from across the state.  MLive
  • Michigan hockey players channeled energy from Monday's basketball title win (Ann Arbor filled with cheering fans) to fuel their performance in Thursday's Frozen Four clash against Denver in Las Vegas.  MLive
  • After an NCAA rule change allowed CHL (Canadian Hockey League) players to join, Michigan added four major junior players including standout goalie Jack Ivankovic, and the coach credited the deeper talent pool with helping the Wolverines earn the No. 1 overall seed and lead the nation in scoring. This shift has strengthened the team as they prepared for the Frozen Four national semifinal against Denver.  MLive
