CRIME NEWS

  • Jeffrey Ray Long was ordered by Judge Patrick Conlin, Jr. to undergo a psychiatric examination after he fatally shot Cindy Gochis last year.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A lawsuit claims that the University of Michigan may lose $31.1 million a year and MSU’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams faces an uncertain future under a new Department of Energy policy — officials say the cuts will jeopardize nuclear research and key technology advances. The suit alleges that these funding changes threaten vital work in materials research and other fields.  MLive
  • Many Arbor One Apartments tenants found red-tag notices on their doors that said CONDEMNED. MUST BE VACATED. All 18 buildings were condemned on Feb 7 — officials declared the complex unfit for human habitation.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor city officials are considering a new boathouse for local rowing groups at Barton Pond + Huron River. City parks staff will meet with other departments and with Skyline High School Crew + Washtenaw Rowing Center to assess the site and plan funding, with a report expected by the end of 2025.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan forward T.J. Hughes said he will return for his senior season with the Wolverines to finish his degree and help the team chase a national championship—even though NHL teams offered him chances to turn pro. He said staying another year will give him more time to grow as a player and prepare for a long career.  MLive
  • Michigan football will see five players enter the NCAA transfer portal today, including French junior edge rusher Aymeric Koumba who played in two games — he still has three years of eligibility. The portal will remain open until April 25 to offer these players a window to explore new opportunities.  MLive
  • Brady Norton, who once rooted against the Wolverines, now plays for Michigan after being selected by offensive line coach Grant Newsome from the transfer portal in December—he has quickly adjusted to the Big Ten by gaining weight and facing tougher opponents in practice.  MLive
  • Mike DeBord, a Michigan coach who helped win the 1997 national championship and later led Central Michigan, died Tuesday at 69 from complications of a stroke he had in 2021. He also coached in college and the NFL — funeral arrangements are pending.  MLive
  • The Michigan softball team beat Rutgers 8-4 on Monday at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor, earning coach Bonnie Tholl her 100th win and extending the team's streak to four. The victory capped a three-game sweep that improved Michigan’s record to 31-12 overall and 9-4 in Big Ten play with strong shows from pitcher Lauren Derkowski and hitters Ellie Sieler, Ella Stephenson, and Jenissa Conway.  MLive
