Good morning, Ann Arbor. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 19th of April.

CRIME NEWS

  • Earlier this week, foster parent Jeffrey Bernhard testified about the night his family was attacked after he heard his wife’s unforgettable scream when a car pulled up—accused accomplices Keith Lamar Finley and Gregory Dwight Callhan now face charges including murder, attempted murder, and kidnapping after Bernhard’s wife and her father were fatally shot while he escaped with lasting injuries.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 90 Michigan school board members signed a joint letter coordinated by the Michigan Education Justice Coalition—an initiative by educators, parents, and community leaders—urging state and federal lawmakers to oppose proposed education budget cuts and boost funding for public schools. The letter, signed on Feb. 25 and delivered to Congresswoman Lisa McClain’s office after rallies at other representatives’ offices, warned that reduced funds would hurt key programs in local schools.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 74% of Michiganders have upgraded their driver's licenses and IDs to REAL ID — required for domestic flights and entry to certain federal facilities after May 7 — with extra appointments now available at state offices to meet the growing demand. Residents are urged to update their identification soon to prevent travel delays.  MLive
  • A federal judge denied a temporary restraining order for four international students from Michigan universities, leaving their F-1 status unclear after their SEVIS records were ended (two are from the University of Michigan and two are from Wayne State) because the court said there was not enough evidence that ending a record means loss of status. A preliminary hearing is set for 10 a.m. Monday, May 19 (the ACLU may take further legal action) to address the students' legal challenges.  MLive
  • Drivers in Washtenaw County face ongoing road work that will cause delays in the coming days—U.S. 23's shoulder will close from 8 Mile to the county border starting at 7 a.m. April 21 until mid-November while local streets in Ann Arbor and surrounding townships have additional closures and lane restrictions scheduled.  MLive
  • Michigan Open Carry sued the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office on March 24 after it refused to release a locally created preapplication form used for firearm applications, claiming that the Freedom-of-Information request should include forms not mandated by state law; attorneys for both sides met to discuss the issue and have not offered further comment.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan junior Nathan Efobi, who played only two snaps in his first two seasons, has waited his turn in the shadows and is now projected to start at right guard—he will showcase his skills today in the spring game with a steak dinner prize on the line.  MLive
  • Michigan football is evaluating transfer running back CJ Hester, who rushed for 529 yards and four touchdowns at UMass last season, as he began a two-day visit that started Friday and continues today with the spring game in the Big House. He is also set to visit Temple on Monday and Tuesday as part of his transfer process.  MLive
