CRIME NEWS

  • A Detroit man, Richard Levoid Johnson II (34), was charged Sunday, April 20, after police found him breaking into an Ann Arbor home with a stun gun and knife and he is suspected in at least three invasions, is held on a $100,000 bond, and will appear in court on May 1.  MLive
  • A man who pleaded no contest for shooting a 23-year-old on March 24 in downtown Ann Arbor was sentenced by Washtenaw County Judge Jinan Hamood to three years in prison and 18 months probation—he received two years for using a firearm during a felony and one year for assault less than murder while additional charges were dismissed.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Yesterday, University of Michigan reallocated funds from its DEI program to boost student access initiatives — expanding the Wolverine Pathways program to five new sites and extending the Go Blue Guarantee to cover full costs for eligible undergraduates starting fall. The university also will launch a new campuswide disability support program and expand mental health services for the 2025-26 academic year.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Committee to Protect Voters’ Rights will soon start collecting signatures for a constitutional amendment that requires voter registration documents to prove American citizenship. The Michigan Board of State Canvassers approved the amendment’s language on April 18 — 446,198 valid signatures are needed by July 6 for the measure to appear on the November 2026 ballot, and the group aims to gather around 600,000 signatures in total.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor's city council approved new zoning changes on April 21 that now allow pinball parlors in downtown & in other commercial zones. The update also removes the 600-seat cap for theaters, letting Pinball Pete’s plan a move to Liberty Street while meeting local demand for more entertainment options.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Ann Arbor Township approved the donation of about 98 acres from Red Equities, LLC (to be used for farming or a township park) next to the new luxury Barton Ridge project north of Ann Arbor; township officials completed due diligence before voting on the deal on April 21. The land donation was required to meet public benefit conditions for the 57-home development (formerly known as Maple Ridge) and will protect the area from future development.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan has 15 players eligible for the 2025 NFL Draft that kicks off tomorrow in Green Bay outside Lambeau Field. The Wolverines could set a program record if four players, including Mason Graham — a top pick expected early — are chosen in the first round.  MLive
  • Michigan players including defensive tackle Mason Graham, cornerback Will Johnson, and tight end Colston Loveland appeared on analyst Mel Kiper Jr.'s final NFL draft ranking released Tuesday; the list shows five former Wolverines in the top 100 and suggests Michigan will set a record with four first-round picks—raising the draft profile of the team.  MLive
