Matthew and Teresa Kavanaugh have expanded their Chop Detroit eatery chain to Ann Arbor by opening a new stand at Biggby Coffee Ice Cube that offers healthier food with signature sandwiches and salads.
They plan to open a soup and smoothie stand at Chelsea’s Arctic Coliseum later this year—updating local ice arena concessions—while renovating an upper floor into a bar and grill called CD Top Shelf.
Ricky Dewayne McCain (56) was ruled competent by a private psychiatric exam on (April 22) to face charges of felony murder and other counts in the death of community leader Jude Walton, and his final pretrial is set for Oct.
7 with a jury trial scheduled for Nov. 17.
City officials left a brick chimney standing on 415 W.
Washington St. near the Ann Arbor YMCA on April 22 so chimney swifts can use it as a roost. The city will redevelop the site for housing after cleanup while keeping the chimney safe—this effort may help protect the vulnerable birds.
On April 21, Ann Arbor City Council approved a $30,000 raise for City Attorney Atleen Kaur, increasing her base salary from $216,300 to $246,300 and awarding a bonus of $7,389—her raise will take effect next pay period.
This decision follows a similar increase for City Administrator Milton Dohoney, which was approved last November.
The Michigan House passed two bills on April 23 that will raise jail time for those manufacturing, selling, or possessing fentanyl with intent to deliver — new penalties range from five years to life based on the amount involved.
The bills now head to the Senate for further review.
Today, the Women’s Center in Ann Arbor marks 25 years of offering mental health care and support to women across 41 counties—its virtual programs have helped many overcome personal challenges.
It will host a large fundraiser soirée in May to expand its services and community outreach.
Emmy-winning Jill Martin, who is now cancer-free, shared her battle with breast cancer and stressed the need for early detection at a Michigan Medicine fundraiser held April 24th at Michigan Central Station — UM alum Tracy Wolfson emceed the event while proceeds supported research and patient care at UM Health Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital.
Michigan tight end Colston Loveland was picked by the Bears at No. 10 in the 2025 NFL draft—he is the highest-drafted tight end from Michigan since 1973—and he is expected to start immediately with his new team.
