ECONOMY NEWS

  • DTE Energy filed a rate increase request on April 24 that, if approved, will raise the typical residential bill by about $13.50 monthly starting early February. The $574.1 million request is meant to pay for grid upgrades (including cleaner energy projects) and starts a 10‐month review by state regulators.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Christopher Taylor recalled that in 2008 he raised grave concerns about a proposed 25-story high-rise near his Burns Park neighborhood amid warnings it could harm community character. Now as mayor he supports balanced densification to address the housing crisis—plans that will be reviewed and voted on this fall.  MLive
  • On April 25, the Michigan Supreme Court declined to settle a divorce dispute over a frozen embryo between Sarah Markiewicz, who wanted to have another child, and David Markiewicz, who opposed further parenthood—saying the unique facts raise policy questions that lawmakers should resolve.  MLive

  • Josaiah Stewart, a Michigan edge rusher who led his team in tackles for loss and sacks in 2024 and helped win a national title in 2023, was picked by the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL draft with the 90th overall selection. He begins his professional career after two strong seasons in college—continuing Michigan's proud NFL legacy.  MLive
  • Michigan tied its record with three NFL first-round picks as Mason Graham went No. 5 to the Cleveland Browns — Colston Loveland went No. 10 to the Bears and Kenneth Grant was chosen No. 13 by the Dolphins. Experts gave mixed grades on the players, praising Graham and Loveland while raising concerns about Grant’s readiness.  MLive
