ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Ann Arbor police said a man in his 30s lost control of his motorcycle near Platt Road and Packard Road at 8:30 p.m. April 29 when he struck a pole — he was taken to a hospital in serious but stable condition and speed is believed to be a factor.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Former pastor William Johnson from 2|42 Community Church in Brighton pleaded guilty on April 14 to 15 felony counts—ranging from tampering with evidence and child sexually abusive activity to computer-related crimes—after a church employee found a hidden camera in a staff bathroom, and he will be sentenced on May 22.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor police said a 68-year-old man was hit by a car on April 30 while crossing at E. Huron and N. Division and is now in the hospital with serious but stable injuries — the driver, a 38-year-old local, was cited for failing to yield.  All About Ann Arbor

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Michigan Law School received nearly 9,000 applications this year— a record that far exceeds its usual 5,500 to 6,000 for the three-year program. Dean Sarah Zearfoss said the school will keep its class size at 300 to 320 despite the surge in interest.  MLive
  • Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos are coming to Ann Arbor this weekend to celebrate their son Joaquin Consuelos’ graduation from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance. The spring commencement is scheduled for Saturday, May 3 — with Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Derek Jeter set as the keynote speaker.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • State environmental officials said PFAS contamination was found at 253 Dino Drive and at a nearby water well in Scio Township, with levels far above legal limits and concerns about risks from a decades-old manufacturing site. The township board set another update for when liability is determined or on Sept. 9, and experts call for more testing—especially as residents worry about the spread of forever chemicals.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor’s planning commission approved a three-story cap for new apartment and condo buildings in low-rise areas during a six-hour meeting on April 29. Officials said the rule lets more units be built without changing neighborhoods and that a final plan with zoning details will go to City Council in November — details may be refined later.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Damon Payne transferred from Alabama to Michigan to finish his college career and play as a defensive tackle, saying his early time in Ann Arbor felt like home. He played in 12 games last season and said he is coming ready to work + he aims to earn his spot on a strong Wolverines d-line.  MLive
