CRIME NEWS

  • Federal immigration officers arrested one person outside a Ypsilanti court between 9 and 9:30 a.m. May 1 (at the 14A-2 District Court on W. Michigan Ave.) and later detained the suspect, who was scheduled for a court appearance, about one mile away.  MLive
  • Kerri Sue Leirstein, 43, was sentenced on April 17, 2024 to one to four years in prison for reportedly pepper spraying two Plum Market employees on November 22, 2023—earning credit for serving 330 days—.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Saline Area Schools will hold second-round interviews on May 7 with candidates Rachel Kowalski and Nick Steinmetz at Liberty School at 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m., and an open house from 4 to 5:45 p.m. will let community members give input.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, May 1, 2025, six firefighters were sworn in at a ceremony inside the downtown fire station at 111 N. 5th Ave as bad weather stopped the usual fire truck push. Fire Chief Mike Kennedy also presented new hybrid and electric vehicle plans — and members received commendations for their work.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hospitals near Ann Arbor and Jackson earned A Hospital Safety Grades from Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit that measures hospital safety. Trinity Health Ann Arbor improved its grade this spring, Trinity Health Livingston received a Straight A for five cycles, and Henry Ford Health Jackson maintained high marks+ showing strong patient safety in the region.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Amorion Walker, a Michigan receiver who played four games last season and spent time at Ole Miss, signed Wednesday with Middle Tennessee State University in Conference—USA, marking his third school in a year. He has two full seasons of eligibility remaining.  MLive
  • Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore said true freshman Andrew Babalola from Overland Park impressed in spring practice and may start at left tackle this fall. He grew from 280 to about 310 pounds during training and will face other players for the starting spot—his strength and balance helped him earn a chance in the competition.  MLive
