COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Food insecurity in Washtenaw County rose to 14% with over 51,000 residents lacking steady access to healthy food, a new Feeding America study showed on May 14. Local nonprofit Food Gatherers reported it needs an extra $2.5M to meet rising costs and funding cuts—county officials have allocated up to $600,000 for nutrition services for seniors.  MLive

  • Blue Tractor BBQ & Brewery and Texacano on East Washington Street in Ann Arbor are closed for an exciting remodel—Mission Restaurant Group said the restaurants will reopen at the end of June while one nearby location stays open on weekends.  MLive
  • Julia Dixon, a University of Michigan alumna from Troy, secured a $250,000 deal with Mark Cuban on Shark Tank airing May 9 to expand her company ESAI that provides college application support. Dixon said the deal includes 5% equity — plus 2.5% advisor shares — which will help her reach more students.  MLive
  • HOMES Brewery in Ann Arbor offers King Cold Brew—a cream ale rested on coffee beans that gives subtle coffee notes without added caffeine or dark color. The beer has a 7.8% ABV and its flavor shifts with each batch.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 19, 2024, Miguel Angel Aparicio-Navas, 38, jumped into a pond to evade police after a car break-in report and later pleaded no contest to assault with intent to commit sexual penetration from a Sept. 24, 2023 incident, with sentencing scheduled for June 12 — he also faces domestic violence charges from two other cases and is held on a $100,000 bond.  MLive
  • A Michigan man—who is a former National Guard member—was arrested Tuesday after flying a drone near TACOM in Warren as part of an alleged plan to start a mass shooting with undercover officers, and he will appear in federal court today on charges of aiding a terrorist group and sharing details of a destructive device.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washtenaw County officials said on May 6 they declined to share records on the county photo ID program with federal immigration officials. The county noted in its formal letter that it will consult legal counsel if additional demands are made.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former pro soccer player Beckham Sunderland retired early after several concussions and changed to kicking after training with his uncle—he played at Texas State in 2024 and will join Michigan later this month with hopes to win the kickoff job in 2025.  MLive
