COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Saline senior Changming Fan’s garden at Mill Pond Manor remains intact a month after the removal deadline despite divided resident views and management uncertainty. Some plants have died from deer and neglect while Fan hopes the legacy remains (he calls the garden his legacy).  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michael Mayo, the award-winning singer, will perform at Blue Llama Jazz Club in Ann Arbor on Friday, May 29 at 7 and 9 p.m. – Tickets are $95 for dinner and show or $50 for cover only.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washtenaw Community College will host 20 hands-on STEM camps for youth aged 6 to 18 starting mid-June on its campus at 4800 E. Huron River Drive. The camps cover topics including robotics, e-sports, space exploration, & healthcare careers in sessions tailored for different ages.  MLive
  • Bipartisan state lawmakers approved bills that remove the writing requirement from the Michigan Merit Exam and stop test results from appearing on high school transcripts; the new measure takes effect June 30 (giving students more time for instruction).  MLive
  • Saline Area Schools approved a plan during a May 12 meeting to purchase a 50,000 sqft building in Pittsfield Township for a new early childhood center to expand preschool options next school year (pending due diligence).  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Scio Township's new fire station on South Wagner Road is under construction and ahead of schedule, with foundations soon to be installed as it aims to boost response times and training options. Approved in November 2024 for a 15,000 sqft building, it will open mid-spring 2027 + provide faster coverage.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Crews cleared trees on an eight-acre site at 2857 Packard Road for the new Enclave of Ann Arbor condo development. Bloomfield Hills-based Robertson Brothers Homes plans 35 detached ranch condos with attached garages coming soon near Buhr Park.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan football added Chicago Mount Carmel four-star pass catcher Quentin Burrell (the first top-100 receiver in a generation) to its 2027 class. He plans an official visit on June 19 during Victors Weekend to help boost the Wolverines’ receiving lineup.  MLive
  • Dexter’s team bounced back on Wednesday with a 5-3 win after a loss to Saline as they stayed in reach of the SEC-Red title—Cooper Arnedt led the scoring. Meanwhile, Pioneer and Chelsea completed sweeps with strong offensive showings in their series.  MLive
  • Michigan women's basketball announced the hiring of Sean Bair as an assistant coach and general manager to fill the gap left by Natalie Achonwa's move to the WNBA. Coach Kim Barnes Arico praised his recruiting and NIL expertise to boost the team's success.  MLive
  • Michigan football added a second top-100 prospect when four-star defensive lineman Xavier Muhammad (ranked No. 97) from South Houston verbally pledged on Thursday. He recently visited Ann Arbor as part of his college search and his commitment boosts the team’s 2027 class.  MLive
  • Wolverine Pickleball (235 Metty Drive) in Scio Township has partnered with the Ann Arbor Mahjong Club to add American mahjong classes to its array of sports and recreation activities. The program, led by Julie Morris, offers beginner workshops and supervised play sessions for those learning the game.  MLive
