COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ann Arbor Police Chief Andre Anderson will share his Ferguson experience and its impact on modern policing at the Memorial Social Justice Symposium on Tuesday, May 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church + the event also honors two local activists who recently died.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Orijin Bakery will open in July at 617 E. Liberty St. to serve sweet pastries and savory breads, replacing Molly's Cupcakes which closed on April 18 (as announced by The Pulpo Group).  MLive
  • Ann Arbor’s Spores Ann Arbor relocated on Monday, May 4 to 315 E. Liberty St. next to Blue Sky Cannabis Co. to offer better parking & convenience, and co-owner Jon Kasgorgis said he plans to add an herb store soon.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Ukrainian National Women's League of America — Branch 50 will host its fifth annual Vyshyvanka Day on May 21 at York Food and Drink, 1946 Packard St, 5 to 9 p.m. This free event celebrates Ukrainian culture and raises funds for frontline paramedics through food, music and craft vendors.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Michigan has raised $660M since last June as part of Look to Michigan (its largest donation drive ever). More than 260,000 donors have helped support student aid and research at its Ann Arbor campus, and the campaign will build funds for scholarships and other projects.  MLive
  • Voters in Ann Arbor-area school districts will decide on Aug. 4 tax millage proposals to renew levies for school operations and capital improvements. Proposals include Washtenaw Community College’s .85-mill renewal, a 2.4-mill sinking fund for Ann Arbor Public Schools, and similar measures in Chelsea, Saline, Whitmore Lake and nearby districts.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A recent study from Construction Coverage shows Ann Arbor median home prices jumped nearly $206,000 over the past decade, rising from $317,393 in March 2016 to $523,391 in March 2026 — a 65% increase that outpaced median income, which grew 45% to $82,212.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan baseball's postseason hopes took a hit when the Wolverines lost to Ohio State in a series opener on Thursday, May 14 at home after a strong start gave way to an eight-run seventh inning and a back-to-back defeat.  MLive
  • Saline junior outfielder Gracie Waldrop recorded 11 hits, 15 RBIs and 2 home runs in an intense nine-game stretch — earning over 45% of the votes to become Ann Arbor-area Athlete of the Week during the week of May 4-9.  MLive
  • Michigan high school girls track rankings updated after reported results through May 14 show leaders in sprints, relays, and field events, with West Bloomfield’s Kamryn Tatum featuring among the top performers. The list is refreshed weekly to feature marks from races spanning 100 to 3200 meters.  MLive
  • Saline offensive lineman Louis Esposito, a three-star commit to Michigan, remains focused on staying in-state despite coaching changes and his father joining the Baltimore Ravens; he will visit during Victors Weekend on June 19-20. Esposito praised the new staff's emphasis on family and in-state talent.  MLive
  • Charles Woodson Jr. is a three-star safety from Lake Nona High School in Orlando who committed to Michigan Friday, following in his father's footsteps in Ann Arbor and becoming the third verbal pledge this week.  MLive
  • Saline promoted assistant coach Sam Hotopp as the new varsity girls basketball head coach Friday afternoon. (He brings over 15 years coaching experience, including a head coaching stint at Adrian High School, to replace former coach Leigh Ann Roehm.)  MLive
  • The Ann Arbor-area baseball scene published stat leaders as of May 15, showcasing top performances in batting averages, hits, and stolen bases from local high schools including Chelsea and Ann Arbor Pioneer. Data was compiled via the GameChanger app (some teams may be missing) for the season.  MLive
