CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Buster Robbins, accused of raping and killing Beverly Wivell in 1989, appeared in court on May20 where a judge considered whether his DNA link connects him to another woman's disappearance—he was given a $5 million bond with a GPS tether while prosecutors appealed the decision. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Washtenaw Community College held its commencement ceremony on May 17 at Eastern Michigan University’s George Gervin GameAbove Center. The ceremony awarded roughly 3,000 degrees and certificates to 2,200 graduates + featured speeches from college leaders. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Safety advocates protested outside City Hall Monday night while council members joined the push for faster street safety upgrades. At the May 19 meeting, council approved a $500K reallocation from the street maintenance budget to fund quick projects + such as enhanced bike lanes and crosswalks at known trouble spots. MLive
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ A study by Path Forward found that Michigan's team-based mental health care model—built into primary care—can lower suicide risk and speed up diagnosis. Jackson—ranking first among Medicare Advantage patients—led the nation while Ann Arbor and Saginaw also ranked high, even though few patients received the care last year. MLive
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ On May 20, Ann Arbor’s Planning Commission approved a plan to convert the four-story Market Place complex at 303 Detroit St. into 16 for-sale condos that will add a fifth story, balconies and an interior parking system—designed to include EV charging, bicycle parking, a geothermal upgrade and solar-ready equipment. Local developer MAVD and builder Tom Fitzsimmons will work to reduce impacts on the nearby Farmers Market during construction, and the project must include a $10,000 contribution for city parks pending City Council approval. - ➤ The Ann Arbor Planning Commission approved a housing project on the polluted former Armen Cleaners site at 630 S. Ashley St. on May 20 — the plan calls for two connected three-story homes with an accessory dwelling unit following a thorough cleanup of toxic soil, while state officials will continue to monitor groundwater safety. - ➤ Ann Arbor Housing Commission and Related Midwest plan a 20-story, 330-unit affordable housing high-rise on the former YMCA property next to the Blake Transit Center — all units reserved for those with low to moderate incomes. Residents will join a virtual meeting on June 4 at 6 p.m. to ask questions before the project moves to the Planning Commission this fall. MLive
