COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Holmes Family Park will open with a ribbon cutting on Aug. 21 and a block party on Aug. 22 at the former Federal Screw Works site in Chelsea. The park features an 8,000 sqft skatepark, sports courts, and a climbing wall and will transfer to the city around July 10. MLive
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ A Yemeni family-run cafe at 414 S. Main St. will have a soft opening early June pending health department and Washtenaw County approval. It will serve Yemeni and regular coffees + teas and pastries + with outdoor seating and a sandwich menu coming later. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ On May 20, nineteen Michigan high school seniors were named U.S. Presidential Scholar semifinalists after recognition for their academic or arts achievements, including two students at Greenhills School in Ann Arbor. They will be considered for national honors as finalist selections continue later. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ann Arbor launched its Sustainable Energy Utility pilot with a $600 yearly flat rate for Bryant participants. The program installed its first solar and battery systems on May 18 and will begin charging customers as early as July 1 with fixed rates through June 2030. MLive
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Michigan football recruiting gains momentum as coach Kyle Whittingham’s new staff secured 12 verbal commitments this month, including five recruits ranked in the top 125 (quieting critics' doubts) in Ann Arbor. MLive
- ➤ Statewide sports fans can now vote for Michigan's top junior boys lacrosse player—votes close next Monday. The poll features candidates including Ann Arbor Skyline's Thor Ham. MLive
