EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Michigan approved a $60M deal on Thursday to purchase 140 acres at 4090 Geddes Road from Concordia University Wisconsin, and the campus with academic and athletic facilities will be evaluated for community and educational use while the sale is expected to close by June 30 (pending due diligence).  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor’s new Sustainable Energy Utility began rolling out solar panels and battery storage systems this week, with the first installation in Bryant on May 18 — nearly 1,400 households had joined the waitlist as of May 20 for renewable energy at set seasonal rates.  MLive
  • Experts said at a May 20 briefing that rising temperatures and heavy rains have made billion-dollar weather events a regular threat in Michigan. They warn that climate change will increase floods, ice loss, and damage to homes & infrastructure from May through October.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor is offering limited-time rebates for electric vehicle purchases with incentives up to $7,500 for qualifying households and local businesses. The program runs through September or until funds are expended—purchases must be from licensed dealers and limited to one rebate per entity.  MLive
  • Residents at Sycamore Meadows Apartments have dealt with sewage backups, water outages, and mold while Superior Township issued a non-compliance notice this week + moved affected families to hotels; officials said the complex has ignored rental inspections, owes nearly $200,000, and faces further action.  All About Ann Arbor
  • U.S. Reps Dingell and Moolenaar introduced bipartisan legislation to tighten hydropower dam oversight after safety gaps from the Edenville failure emerged, with FERC required to review operator finances, share records, and hold a technical meeting set for Oct. 2027 — measures aimed at boosting dam safety.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Local girls track and field athletes are ranked after regionals on May 21 (Gabrielle Haudan of Ann Arbor Pioneer led the 100 dash with 11.99 seconds) as competitors from Huron, Saline, and others posted top marks in sprints, relays, and hurdles.  MLive
  • Michigan baseball lost 7 to 1 to Washington and then faced Ohio State on May 14 at Ray Fisher Stadium in a must-win elimination game that set their course toward a quarterfinal against Nebraska and affected their NCAA Tournament hopes.  MLive
  • Michigan Wolverines' cornerbacks coach Jernaro Gilford praised returning players Hill and Berry and noted Utah transfer Snowden will lead the switch to man coverage during the spring game on April 18 at Michigan Stadium — a sign of promising talent for the upcoming season.  MLive
  • The Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team will return to Las Vegas on Nov. 24 for the Players Era 16 tournament + they will open play against the Creighton Bluejays as reigning national champions.
