COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Township planners approved the final site plan for the Hidaya Muslim Community Center on May 8 in Pittsfield Township near Golfside and Ellsworth roads. The center, covering *58,000 square feet* with prayer halls, a gym, and 22 housing units, will serve the Muslim community and anyone interested *after years of legal and community challenges*.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A thief broke into World of Rocks in Ypsilanti today — leaving shattered glass and a large rock behind as three other nearby businesses were also targeted and police later collected fingerprints from the scene.  WXYZ
  • Ed Berger said Elena James did not return Isabelle—a 9-year-old golden retriever ordered back by a May 15 court ruling following Susan Hammerton's fatal stabbing—and his attorney said he will pursue further legal options as James remains in Texas and filed on May 18 to move the case to federal court, claiming the dog is part of Hammerton’s assets.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washtenaw County officials on May 21st opposed a proposed 39-mile express lane corridor on I‑94 for connected and automated vehicles because of concerns over equitable access and environmental impacts. The county resolution will be shared with state officials — including Gov. Whitmer and MDOT — as the project remains in the planning and testing stages.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Michigan health officials revealed a new Ypsilanti Health Center at 300 W. Michigan Ave. that will open Monday, June 2 in the former Eastern Michigan University College of Business building. The center (built with a $40 million investment to serve about 20,000 more patients each year) aims to reduce health disparities and expand care in the community.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Former Michigan linebacker Michael Barrett signed with the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday and is preparing for training camp. Barrett, Michigan’s winningest player with 208 tackles and a team captain during the national championship season, will work to secure a spot on the active roster—his NFL journey has included stints on multiple practice squads.  MLive
  • Michigan Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore is ranked No. 58 among Power Four conference coaches by CBS Sports—six spots lower than last year. He led the team to key wins, including an upset over Ohio State and a bowl win after a mixed start to his first full season.  MLive
