- ➤ Memorial Day in Washtenaw County features parades, ceremonies and a pops concert to honor military service members. The pops concert will take place today at Riverside Park while parades in Ann Arbor and nearby communities are scheduled for May 26 — details vary by location. MLive
- ➤ John 'Johnny Quick' Kramer of Street Outlaws now manages Milan Dragway, and the track is set to reopen later this month under International Hot Rod Association ownership. Ann Arbor leaders are also planning housing changes and infrastructure upgrades while residents face recent fatal incidents and look forward to upcoming farmer’s markets—trends that are shaping our community. - ➤ Taste of Ann Arbor will return on Sunday, June 1 at the corner of Main and Liberty with small plates and drinks from over 20 local restaurants and shops—attendees will also enjoy live music and benefit from temporary street closures from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. MLive
ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A 53-year-old Ohio driver fell asleep while driving his semitruck on U.S. 23 near Huron Drive in Ann Arbor Township around 11:10 p.m. May 22 and crashed into a bridge embankment that sent his truck over the railing—some fuel leaked and he was taken to University of Michigan Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening—and he received a citation for careless driving. BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Botanical Bakeshop in Milan was named on PETA’s Top 10 National 2025 vegan bakeries list on May 14—making it the only Michigan bakery recognized for its wedding cakes. The shop makes vegan pastries and custom cakes by order and serves local Ann Arbor customers through select cafés. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Woody Harold LaBudde pleaded no contest to armed robbery at a Saline bank and to charges of blocking a police officer at Washtenaw County Trial Court in Ann Arbor—canceling his trial and setting his sentencing for June 25 when his bank robbery charge will be dismissed and he may face up to a life sentence. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Washtenaw County announced that Nixon Road between Huron Parkway and Bluett Drive will close starting May 27 through August for an $18.5 million reconstruction project that installs three roundabouts—additional road closures and lane restrictions across the area will affect local traffic in the coming days. - ➤ ITC Transmission and Michigan Electric Transmission Company will fly low helicopters over Washtenaw County and nearby areas from May 27-30 to inspect power lines for damage, wear, and vegetation hazards—residents are advised not to be alarmed if they see them. MLive
- ➤ MDOT announced on May 23 that it will soon display warnings on highway message boards — advising drivers to ignore texts about unpaid tolls. The effort aims to protect travelers during Memorial Day weekend and reduce toll text scams. MLive
