CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Michigan State Police are investigating a hit-and-run that killed a 52-year-old man from Warren on May 25 at about 2:25 a.m. on I-94 in Ypsilanti Township when a black sedan struck the unclothed man as he walked on the highway—authorities have not identified the driver and are probing why he was there. - ➤ Six Ypsilanti businesses were targeted by thieves who threw rocks through windows and stole cash registers over the holiday weekend—local business owners now report heightened concern. Ypsilanti police are increasing their night patrols—urging anyone with clues to contact authorities. WXYZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ann Arbor Public School officials awarded nearly $76,300 in scholarships to about 20 seniors during a board meeting on May 21—selections came from nine programs offering up to $5,000 each. Thirteen students received the full $5,000 award and the scholarships will help them attend college next fall. MLive
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Citizen scientists can report shipwreck parts or other artifacts found on Great Lakes beaches using the Beach Wreckage Recording Form (which asks for GPS coordinates, a description, and photos). The form will help add new finds to Michigan's inventory of over 1,500 lost vessels (including the historic Minnehaha wreck off Arcadia Beach Natural Area). MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Mayor Christopher Taylor said city hall plans to change zoning so that diverse, denser housing can be built across Ann Arbor while keeping the neighborhood feel & ensuring developers cover the cost of new infrastructure so taxpayers are not affected. City Council Member Jen Eyer added that the plan will allow duplexes and triplexes in single-family areas, with final approval coming in November and changes beginning in 2026. MLive
- ➤ On May 22, a bipartisan group of Michigan senators introduced a 10-bill package that limits no-knock warrants, classifies chokeholds as deadly force, and requires de-escalation training and a duty to intervene (developed with input from law enforcement and community groups) to improve public safety, and the legislation now awaits committee assignment. - ➤ Michigan lawmakers passed House bills on May 22 that would allow officers to arrest drivers based solely on roadside saliva tests—despite concerns that the tests can produce false results and do not measure impairment. Critics argue that using these tests may lead to wrongful arrests and call the method unreliable. MLive
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ A college football preview magazine said Michigan will be competitive in 2025 but will miss the playoff, predicting a fourth-place finish in the Big Ten and a Citrus Bowl spot against Florida.
