- ➤ Pita Express at Briarwood Mall was evicted after non-payment of rent in a court case that began on April 7 and resulted in a default judgment on May 4. A sheriff’s deputy posted an order on May 21 requiring the restaurant to vacate the premises within 24 hours. MLive
- ➤ Utilidata, an Ann Arbor firm developing AI data center technology, recently raised an additional $40 million in funding and has expanded its headquarters to a new 15,000 sqft innovation lab on Green Road — it will launch its first deployment with NexGen Cloud in Montreal this June. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University of Michigan physics professor Lu Li was named a Brown Investigator to receive up to $2M over five years for research on magnetic fields’ direct effect on insulators — a move that makes him one of eight nationwide winners, Michigan News reported. MLive
- ➤ UM professor Stephen Forrest was elected as a fellow of the Royal Society on May 27, joining a global community that includes Isaac Newton and Benjamin Franklin. His work in fiber optics + organic electronics has shaped modern communication and display tech. MLive
- ➤ The University of Michigan has spent over $12.5 million on external investigations and executive search fees since 2025 amid administrative changes and scandals, including probes into the athletic department and leadership roles. It re-engaged its presidential search on May 4. MLive

- ➤ The Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority’s Fleet Services team was named the top public transportation fleet in North America by the NAFA Fleet Management Association from 100 nominees. - ➤ Skyline girls soccer won its second district title in four years on May 28 at Huron High School by beating Pioneer 3-1, led by seniors Kennedy Wassef and River Pham. - ➤ Michigan basketball is rebuilding its starting frontcourt after Aday Mara (7-foot-3 center) declared for the NBA draft on May 27 while teammates Morez Johnson Jr. and Yaxel Lendeborg also left and transfers including Moustapha Thiam have been added. MLive
- ➤ Michigan football’s *2027* recruiting class climbed into the top 10 nationally after three new commitments were added last week. The move shows promise for the program’s future under first-year coach Kyle Whittingham. MLive
