BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Ray Campise became the new owner of Sparrow Market at 407 N. 5th Ave in Kerrytown on May 1 after Jordan Sparrow stepped aside. He started in 2016 mopping floors and rose to manager — he now plans minor changes to the layout while continuing to serve loyal customers. MLive
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Four people—including a husband and wife—were charged with impersonating police during a home invasion in Augusta Township on Jan. 4 at 8:26 a.m. when masked individuals forced entry into a home, pistol-whipped a resident, zip-tied two adults, and caused extensive damage before fleeing in a rental vehicle, with all set to appear in court on June 12. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ A study found that in 2024 three national union training programs held at local colleges in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti generated a total economic impact of $23M by drawing thousands of skilled tradespeople who spent on hotels, restaurants and local businesses. The programs led to 20,921 hotel room nights, nearly $793,000 in tax revenue and supported 180 local jobs — boosting the area’s economy. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Ypsilanti Community Schools will open a new K-8 dual language Spanish immersion school this fall at its former middle school on Emerick Street — the building is being updated to better serve both kindergarteners and older students. The program will offer grades K–8 and is expected to eventually serve 500 to 600 students — new students from outside the district can join after passing language tests. MLive
- ➤ Ann Arbor Public Schools will buy six electric buses and three charging stations to help cut transportation emissions by 2035—each bus costing about $450,000 with most funds coming from a state grant. The decision was discussed at the May 21 board meeting, and the new buses are set for delivery during the 2026 fiscal year. MLive
- ➤ Ann Arbor Academy hosted a special driver’s ed class for students with autism, ADHD, and other learning disabilities that offers extra hours, smaller groups, and sensory-friendly support to help build driving skills. The course met for two hours Monday through Friday at a cost of $1,050 per student and may have additional sessions in September if the instructor is available — meeting a growing need for accessible driver training. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ State environmental grants totaling $1.1 million will fund scrap tire drop-off events and cleanups in several counties, including a $9,000 award to Livingston County’s public works department and a $19,000 award in Monroe County—efforts that aim to reduce fire hazards and mosquito breeding by recycling tires into useful products. - ➤ Sixteen cucumber products sold at Kroger stores in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Tennessee were recalled on May 28 due to possible Salmonella contamination—FDA authorities urged customers to discard any affected items immediately. MLive
