CRIME NEWS

  • A Chelsea man's cat, Bucky, died after getting caught in a neighbor's steel-jawed leghold trap + the Humane Society of Huron Valley warned residents to use humane wildlife control methods.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Dr. Charles Holmes is set to become the next dean of the UM School of Public Health starting July 1, pending Board approval on June 25. He returns to UM with worldwide health experience after earning his MPH in 1995 (May 28 update).  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The University of Michigan collected more than 16 tons of reusable items during spring move-out and graduation, keeping waste from campus events to 217 pounds and redirecting 32,000 pounds of clothes, bedding, and household goods to student programs and local nonprofits in Ann Arbor.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A Bloomfield Hills-based developer is reviving the approved 73-home subdivision behind Arborland mall on Ann Arbor’s east side. Utility installation begins in June or July while sales start later this year — the project will feature luxury ranch and colonial homes on 36 acres with a new park.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan high school girls track and field rankings released through May 28 list top finishers in events like the 100 dash and shot put; Ann Arbor Pioneer runner Natasza Dudek ranks high in the 1600 run (and several other events) as athletes from various schools compete across the state.  MLive
  • Three Michigan Wolverines players + Aday Mara, Yaxel Lendeborg, and Morez Johnson Jr. will be first-round NBA draft picks on June 23, with multiple outlets rating Mara as the top prospect due to his standout performance in Michigan’s title run.  MLive
  • On Friday, May 29, Greenhills defeated Milan 2-0 for its third straight district title and will play in Tuesday's 7 p.m. regional semifinal at Ann Arbor Huron High School as standout midfielder Cate Alumkal scored the decisive goal & helped secure the win.  MLive
  • Former Michigan pitcher Cameron Weston made his MLB debut for the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday, May 28, pitching a scoreless top of the ninth inning in Toronto, despite his team losing 2-1 to the Blue Jays. He struck out his first batter on three pitches and induced a double play.  MLive
  • A final stat leaderboard has been released May 29 showing top Ann Arbor-area softball players in batting, hitting, and pitching as teams head into the district tournament (based on GameChanger data and including schools such as Ann Arbor FGR, Chelsea, Dexter, and Ypsilanti Lincoln).  MLive
  • Michigan football added its first linebacker for the 2027 class as Buford (Ga.) three-star player Brayden Watson committed, choosing Michigan over Oregon, USC and Mississippi State and boosting the pledge count to 16.  MLive
