  • Tech industry leaders and Gov. Whitmer broke ground Monday, June 1 at a controversial $16 billion data center project at The Barn in Saline Township, south of Ann Arbor. The project will create 2,500 union construction jobs & generate tax revenue for the township.  MLive
  • Fifth Third Bank will close 75 branches in Michigan this September to streamline its network, with 55 former Comerica sites and 20 current branches — leaving 227 locations across 39 counties and 116 in Metro Detroit.  ClickOnDetroit.com

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Residents in Ann Arbor who use DTE Energy or Consumers Energy have faced higher summer peak rates on weekdays between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. since June 1 — a plan designed to ease grid strain by shifting energy use to off-peak hours through Sept. 30.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildlife officials advise keeping a safe distance from young fawns, bunnies, and birds found alone since mothers will return to protect their offspring. Residents should contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator only if an animal appears injured.  MLive
  • UM's Taubman Health Sciences Library at 1135 Catherine St. earned a 2025 energy award from the Michigan Green Building Collaborative for a 23% energy reduction that saved 100 to 125 metric tons of CO2 and $30,000, paying for itself in under a year. UM aims for net-zero emissions by 2040.  MLive

  • Bryce Barbarino, the Ann Arbor Defensive Player of the Year, announced his commitment to Western Michigan University on Monday afternoon via social media. The 14-year-old linebacker—fresh from a breakout season at Saline—earned offers from several Division I programs and will enter his final prep year as a top recruit.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor area track and field athletes captured state titles and earned all-state honors over the weekend at the state finals - with Skyline and Pioneer winning key relay events and standout individual performances marking local excellence.  MLive
  • Michigan football has landed its first linebacker commit for its 2027 recruiting class when three-star Brayden Watson from Buford (Ga.) announced his plan on Friday, filling a needed role for the team. His commitment boosts Michigan’s class rankings amid strong recruiting competition.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor-area high school sports fans can vote for Athlete of the Week based on performances from May 25 to May 30. Votes end at 9 a.m. Friday and the winner will be announced shortly after.  MLive
  • Harper Woods receiver Dakota Guerrant was seen at Wayne State’s Tom Adams Field on Monday during the National College Showcase. He will visit Oregon this weekend and Michigan on June 19-20, planning to announce his commitment early in July.  MLive
