CRIME NEWS

  • Police responded to a stand-off in Northfield Township on Tuesday, June 3 at 4:35 a.m. near Seven Mile Road and Nollar Road and the bomb squad arrived at 9 a.m.—officials reported that a barricaded suspect was armed and an injured person was taken from a nearby gas station in stable condition.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor fire crews responded at 11:04 a.m. on June 3 to a suspicious fire at Victory Inn and Suites on Washtenaw Ave which reached the third floor and was under control by 11:30 a.m.—officials suspect the fire was started intentionally at a hotel already ordered for demolition due to health violations.  MLive
  • FBI charged a Chinese scholar at the University of Michigan and her boyfriend with smuggling a pathogen that can cause severe crop disease—Liu admitted to smuggling it on July 27 at Detroit Metropolitan Airport while Jian said she did not know about the plan.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor City Council voted 9-0 on June 2 to rezone the 1.21-acre downtown library site for high-rise development — a move that will allow a new mixed-use library with housing above — while voters will decide in August whether to include the adjacent Library Lane property. Library officials said they will plan spaces for growing public use and discuss the parking garage once its debt is paid off.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor public works staff told the Planning Commission on June 3 that if the new land-use plan moves forward the city’s water and sewer systems could reach their limits — requiring costly upgrades to support future growth, as current facilities are near capacity.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor City Council voted 9-0 to require a sobriety test for Spin scooter and e-bike riders before late-night trips, a rule enforced through the mobile app. The new contract with Pheenix USH LLC runs from July 1 to June 30 and includes rider education events and quarterly injury reports—steps designed to boost public safety.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Ann Arbor City Council approved a deal with Landmark Properties on June 2 for 19 affordable apartments at the nearly complete Legacy high-rise behind the Michigan Theater, with rents ranging from $1,275 to $1,701 — 13 units serve households earning up to 80% of the median income and 6 units serve those up to 60%, and they will remain affordable for 99 years and be available in August.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • A team of student-athletes from Washtenaw Technical Middle College in Ann Arbor have developed an app to help injured athletes rate pain and communicate with coaches and medical staff — the tool lets them select pain areas and discomfort levels — they are now headed to Georgia for a national competition as the first Michigan students to reach the top 10.  WXYZ
