CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Ann Arbor police are investigating three dumpster fires set by arson on Tuesday, June 3 in downtown areas on Miller Avenue and Chapin Street where fires started between 10:30 and 11 p.m. and only the dumpsters were damaged—officials are not sure if one person started all the fires. MLive
- ➤ A Chinese scholar at the University of Michigan, Yunqing Jian, is charged with smuggling a dangerous fungus, Fusarium graminearum, into the U.S. with her boyfriend who was denied entry and sent back to China & Jian is in custody ahead of her 1 p.m. hearing today. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ann Arbor has released a draft plan to change zoning rules so more higher-density housing and work spaces are built. Joe Giant, the new economic development director, said the plan aims to let workers find affordable homes—while details on the zoning updates are still being worked out. MLive
- ➤ On June 3, Ypsilanti City Council voted 5–2 not to cut any police positions despite a projected $5.5M budget shortfall for fiscal year 2025–2026—other cuts saved over $508,000 even as the department continues to face challenges with 10 vacant positions and overtime issues. Newly hired police chief Tim Anderson remains hopeful that staffing will improve over the next year. MLive

- ➤ The Ann Arbor Housing Commission and Related Midwest unveiled renderings yesterday for a 20-story affordable housing tower at 350 S. Fifth Ave. next to the Blake Transit Center, with construction set to begin in 2026 and completion expected in 2028. The project will include 330 apartments+retail spaces and a sustainable design featuring geothermal energy for heating and cooling. MLive
- ➤ Developers propose to tear down the old Hawkins Auto Body building at 1251 N. Main St. to build a four-story self-storage facility with office space, with formal plans to be submitted later in June. Neighbors attended a public meeting on June 4 at 311 N. Main St.—with virtual access provided—to ask questions and discuss concerns over an undersized water main along North Main Street. MLive
