CRIME NEWS

  • Shuvonne Vinson, charged with fatally shooting members of a foster family in Northfield Township north of Ann Arbor, said during her June 5 hearing that the Bernhard family hurt her daughter while a judge ruled she is competent to stand trial; she and two accomplices face more than a dozen felony charges including open murder and kidnapping.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Downtown Ann Arbor will host the 28th Annual African American Festival on Saturday, June 7 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.—a free event that features children’s activities, live music, and over 100 vendors serving African, Caribbean, and local foods. Event organizer Teesha Montague said the festival will honor the city’s Black heritage and promote youth entrepreneurship through education on local history and business opportunities.  MLive
  • Yesterday, Ann Arbor’s free Sonic Lunch concert series began with local musician Joe Hertler giving an acoustic set near Liberty Plaza & was soon followed by energetic electronic pop from Mike Posner with DJ Brody Jenner spinning records and sharing messages of hope. The duo will return for future shows featuring both local and national acts.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ann Arbor Public Schools' recreation programs are bouncing back after COVID as new director Sean Williams, who began in March, opens registration for summer camps and classes for kids and adults. Officials said participation is rising compared to pandemic lows + programs now include both grant-funded and regular summer camps across a range of age groups.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan's bat population is working to recover from a 90% loss due to white-nose syndrome, and the Department of Natural Resources has launched a program to track roosts. Residents are asked to spend about three minutes reporting sightings on trees, chimneys (and similar structures) to support conservation efforts.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Washtenaw County approved a plan on June 5 to give $200k baseline funding to 10 senior centers through a new county millage for people 60 or older—some officials wanted to add more centers or change funding levels. The board will vote next month on the final funding and on creating an office to manage the senior millage funds.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan recorded a 35% drop in opioid overdose deaths in 2024 with about 1,000 fewer fatalities compared to the previous year. State officials credited the decline to a broad opioid response that focused on prevention+recovery and harm reduction initiatives.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan coach Sherrone Moore starts his second season under pressure as Lindy's Sports names him one of the top coaches to watch. The magazine predicts Michigan will finish fourth in the Big Ten and says challenges such as a reported suspension and team changes may affect performance while officials back his leadership after his win over Ohio State last season.  MLive
