COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This week, vandals cut peony blossoms at the Arb and police investigated a case in which a UM researcher and her boyfriend were accused of smuggling a dangerous fungus, while Santa Ono was rejected for a Florida job due to his past views. Other local news saw a former Ypsilanti official charged with embezzlement, a 12-hour kidnapping standoff in Northfield ended— and a man died after setting himself on fire in a nearby township.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Christopher Scott Knieper, 36, was charged with two felony counts for resisting and obstructing police and a misdemeanor domestic violence charge after he barricaded himself in a Northfield Township home for nearly 12 hours beginning around 3:30 p.m. June 3, and following his June 5 arraignment he is held on a $5,000 cash bond and set to appear in court on June 12 — the standoff ended peacefully after brief negotiations.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ann Arbor Pioneer held its Class of 2025 graduation on June 5 at Eastern Michigan University’s George Gervin GameAbove Center in Ypsilanti, where 438 seniors received their diplomas. Seven seniors were recognized for community service and speeches encouraged students to persevere through challenges — officials said the ceremony marked a hopeful new beginning.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City Administrator Milton Dohoney said in a June 3 meeting that Ann Arbor will grow even though its water+sewer systems need upgrades, with plans to add up to 1,800 new homes a year by 2050. City staff is studying improvements for water treatment and wastewater systems while recent utility rate increases help fund nearly $68 million in near-term sewer projects.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan officials met with NCAA representatives at headquarters in Indianapolis during a two-day hearing that started Friday (the meeting deals with a 2023 sign-stealing incident involving former staffer Connor Stalions). Officials will address nearly a dozen alleged rule violations while the NCAA reviews evidence and decides penalties (no punishment was given yet).  MLive
  • Michigan will host Central Michigan on September 13 in Ann Arbor as the Wolverines maintain their undefeated record against in-state foes while the Chippewas (now under coach Matt Drinkall after three losing seasons) face a tough challenge with returning quarterback Joe Labas after his injury last season.  MLive
  • Michigan football's top-10 receiver recruits show that many players transferred or were drafted while only one came from the last ten classes. The new coaches plan more passing plays in 2025—this shift may change future recruiting—while the team builds on its past work.  MLive
