Good morning, Ann Arbor. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 11th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • Federal authorities arrested Chinese researcher Chengxuan Han on June 9 after he admitted sending four packages with roundworm material to a University of Michigan lab during 2024 and 2025; his detention hearing will be held today—he faces charges of smuggling and making false statements.  ClickOnDetroit.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bone Thugs-N-Harmony and Three 6 Mafia are set to co-headline a 24-city tour that stops in Michigan at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston on August 24. Tech N9ne & DJ Quik will open the show, and tickets go on sale on Friday, June 13 at 10:00 a.m.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On May 4, former University of Michigan president Santa Ono resigned and said that current tensions with some regents made it hard for him to lead effectively—he had accepted a call to head the University of Florida but his appointment was rejected on June 3. UM officials later appointed an interim president while questions about regent dynamics remain.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor Public Schools officials will hold a public hearing today at 7 p.m. at the Earhart Administration Building to finalize the 2025-26 budget that removes an earlier $25 million shortfall. One official said the plan is based on 'middle of the road' state funding assumptions (which may guide next steps) and will be reviewed at the meeting.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The City of Ann Arbor euthanized beavers at Leslie Park Golf Course because their dam building risked flooding and upset local residents who argued the animals should have been relocated (a more humane option). City officials said the MDNR does not issue permits for trapping and relocating beavers (so the city will consider other measures) to manage the creek's flow.  WXYZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor officials nearly finished a new land-use plan after more than two years of talks on denser neighborhoods—residents saw a draft map at a session at the Traverwood Branch Library on May 7.  MLive
  • The Michigan Department of Transportation proposes rules to ban camping, living in vehicles, and extended parking at rest areas and carpool lots. Travelers may still sleep in their vehicles for less than 48 hours, but tents and long stays will be forbidden + law enforcement will enforce the rules with violations treated as misdemeanors if approved for 2026.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • University of Michigan will buy three Ann Arbor properties for about $6.3 million when the Board of Regents votes on the deal at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Ruthven Building — the purchase includes a house at 415 Church St. with a closing on July 4 and two buildings on Washtenaw Court with existing leases.  MLive
  • A developer announced that new apartments next to Briarwood Mall will be called The Harlan — a nod to former University of Michigan president Harlan Hatcher — and released drawings for the planned four-story building.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bryce Underwood, the nation's top recruit, could join a rare group as the fourth true freshman to start at quarterback for Michigan if he wins the job for the Aug. 30 opener against New Mexico. He has been on campus since January and faces competition from veteran quarterback Mikey Keene—making the coaching decision key for the team.  MLive
