Good morning, Ann Arbor. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 12th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Crews installed a new pedestrian tunnel between Bandemer Park and Barton Nature Area on June 4th that will join the Border-to-Border Trail. The 48-hour project replaced a section above the Amtrak railroad and a one-minute time-lapse video shows the work.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Red Hawk Bar and Grill, a 33-year-old restaurant near the University of Michigan, closed on May 3 after failing to pay almost $10,000 in monthly rent, leading to a court-ordered eviction and a posted notice this week. Co-owner Roger Hewitt confirmed the restaurant had vacated the building and Oxford Property Management said the space is now available for lease — new restaurant plans are being considered for the site.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • The University of Michigan Board of Regents will meet today at 3:30 p.m. in the Ruthven Building to vote on a resolution that—if approved—will allow a 90-second fireworks display from the stadium's east and west towers at the Zach Bryan concert on Sept. 27. The plan, produced by Las Vegas-based Pyrotek Special Effects Inc., awaits final safety approval by the university fire marshal.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Local officials are monitoring beaver activity at Leslie Park Golf Course—after removing dam-building beavers from a creek on June 6—and deciding if any animals can be saved, according to Washtenaw County Water Resources Commissioner Gretchen Driskell’s office.  MLive

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Miss Kim in Ann Arbor now offers the Señorita Choi cocktail that mixes sweet house-made honey syrup, smoky mezcal, and a kick from muddled jalapeño (with fresh cilantro) in a coupe glass. The drink is a new menu staple balanced with fresh lime juice and is served at 415 N. 5th Ave during regular hours.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Housing prices in Ann Arbor have soared with one-bedroom apartments over $1,700 and homes renting for between $5,800 and $6,200—making it hard for many residents to afford living. City officials say major growth will help ease the trend if it brings more affordable options.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan received a commitment from three-star defensive lineman Alister Vallejo from Liberty Hill High School in Texas—he chose Michigan over finalists such as Notre Dame and Kansas during a ceremony at his school where he thanked family and coaches.  MLive
  • Michigan assistant coach Steve Casula signed a new two-year contract in April that raised his pay by 25% and promoted him to co-offensive coordinator — a move he said meant everything for him and his family.
