EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ann Arbor third grade teacher Hannah Palmer, founder of a mental health nonprofit, was crowned Miss Michigan 2025 and said her win will help others overcome hard times—she will now prepare for the Miss America competition over the next eight weeks. Palmer, who has faced big struggles, said her journey shows that anyone can work hard to succeed.  WXYZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor residents will attend a public forum planned to discuss the pros and cons of Proposals A and B that could change the downtown library block by undoing a central park designation and allowing the city to sell Library Lane property—this comes ahead of the Aug. 5 ballot.  MLive
  • Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel sued Tribar Technologies, the auto supplier blamed for polluting Ann Arbor's water, and its subsidiary Adept Plastic Finishing on June 12, 2022 for releasing PFAS chemicals into the Huron River that supplies the city's drinking water — the suit claims that stormwater contamination continues despite past warnings.  MLive
  • U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell of Ann Arbor was confirmed to be on a Minnesota shooter's target list, her office said—she has not given any comment on the matter.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood impressed at the spring game on April 19 as he fights off transfer Mikey Keene + his strong throw and size may earn him the starting role. The five-star freshman now appears ready to help the team improve its passing game.  MLive
  • Michigan senior Savannah Sutherland won the 400-meter hurdles national title on Saturday in Eugene in record time of 52.46 seconds—2.20 seconds faster than runner-up Akala Garrett, breaking the old record of 52.76 seconds from 2018. She claimed her second title in the event and ended her college track career with the win.  MLive
  • Michigan football added veteran transfer quarterback Jake Garcia to its 2025 roster on Monday. Garcia started six games for East Carolina last season and will compete for a backup role alongside freshman Bryce Underwood and graduate transfer Mikey Keene.  MLive
  • Saline High School offensive lineman Louis Esposito received a scholarship offer from Michigan after performing well at a camp in Ann Arbor last week—he is one of more than a dozen recruits with Division I offers, and his father, Michigan defensive line coach Lou Esposito, shared his pride on social media.  MLive
  • Former Michigan defenseman Quinn Hughes was named one of the first six players on USA Hockey’s preliminary roster for the 2026 Olympics in Italy. He had a strong season with the Canucks—finishing third in Norris Trophy voting with 16 goals and 76 points—and played two seasons with the Wolverines from 2017 to 2019.  MLive
