EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ In five of nine Washtenaw County school districts, boards have named new superintendents in Manchester, Milan and Saline while Lincoln and Dexter schools see their leaders leave; the new heads will start this summer. - ➤ Local school boards in the Ann Arbor area compared superintendent contracts while five districts plan leadership changes for the 2025-26 school year starting July 1—this follows recent moves such as Mike Kapolka’s renegotiated contract in Chelsea after his unanimous selection. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Michigan joined a lawsuit with 15 other states to challenge federal cuts to mental health funding for K-12 schools that were meant to bring in mental health professionals after the Uvalde shooting—Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said the canceled grants were illegal and irresponsible. - ➤ On July 3, the board voted to establish a new Office of Aging Services that will manage more than $11 million a year in taxpayer funds for residents aged 60 and older—using money from a county-wide tax levy. The office will soon start supporting local senior services. MLive
- ➤ On July 1, the Michigan House approved bills that let police use a saliva swab — checking for drugs like THC, cocaine, methamphetamine, opiates and benzodiazepines — instead of blood tests. The bills passed 61-44 and will go to the state Senate for further review. MLive

- ➤ Ypsilanti-based artist Gary Horton completed the 'Love Letter' mural on June 24 at the @properties office (912 N Main St) in Ann Arbor as part of the 'love where you live' campaign by @properties and Christie’s International Real Estate. It took him nine days to paint the piece, reflecting the companies’ core value of love. MLive
- ➤ A new tall student housing building with 19 floors will be built near the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor’s South University District. The project, named Chapter Ann Arbor, will offer 183 units with 625 beds and modern amenities—including smart TVs, in-unit washers and dryers, study lounges, a fitness center and a rooftop patio—and is scheduled to begin construction in August for occupancy by the 2027-28 academic year.
