  • Michigan camp leaders urged parents to ask about safety plans after floods in Texas killed more than two dozen at Camp Mystic on July 6. They explained that camps are reviewing key steps (like buddy checks for swimming) and local emergency response plans (with quick help from services) to keep campers safe.  MLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Foster Bridge on N. Maple Road in Ann Arbor Township has been closed since June 9 after a boater spotted a broken steel cable on the 150-year-old bridge—residents between Huron River Drive and Country Club Road face a long detour with no set reopening date.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • A neighbor testified that Antonio Brown, 36, was fatally shot in Ypsilanti last May when he went outside to check the sound of gunfire during a visit with Chloe Duenas — the trial for the accused began on July 8.  MLive
  • Police responded around 11 p.m. on July 7 at Liberty Plaza—310 S. Division Street in downtown Ann Arbor—after a man attacked a 58-year-old with a box cutter during an altercation, and the victim was taken to the hospital with neck injuries.  MLive

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hot weather in late June raised Great Lakes water temperatures, with southern beaches nearing 80 degrees—ideal for swimming. Satellite data from July 6 shows northern shores of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron still have chillier water.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor officials announced a $600K study to reimagine North Main Street that builds on a 12-year-old task force report recommending new sidewalks, bike lanes — and crosswalks to improve pedestrian safety. The study is expected to guide future transportation improvements along the city's major corridor.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor officials faced criticism Monday night for planning to back Arbor South—a nearly 20-acre mixed-use project off State Street and Eisenhower Parkway. At a July 7 council meeting, members voted 7–4 to have City Administrator Milton Dohoney continue talks with the developer and plan to issue bonds for a public parking deck once built.  MLive
