COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rising Hope for Housing received more than $279K in state grant funds to help Washtenaw County residents with criminal records secure and keep housing. The program will expand its services to improve access for people impacted by the criminal justice system+ officials are now planning next steps to use the funds for more support.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Fareed George Hajjar, 58, waived his preliminary examination on July 15—he will stand trial on a human trafficking charge for transporting the woman whose body was later found on a Washtenaw County roadside.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Washtenaw Community College announced that it will offer five new programs, including associate degrees in Engineering Technology and Construction Technology and certificates in Semiconductor and Battery Manufacturing, Advanced Auto Body Repair, and Education Paraprofessional, starting next fall. The college will freeze tuition at $99 per credit for in-district students — registration is open online until the night before classes begin on August 25.  ClickOnDetroit.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor voters began early in-person voting for Aug. 5 as they decide on two proposals that could allow the city to transfer Library Lane property—if approved—to the Ann Arbor District Library as part of plans for a new downtown library.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Michigan Health-Ann Arbor ranked no. 1 in Michigan for adult hospitals by U.S. News and World Report’s Best Hospitals ranking for 2025-2026 — it is also among the top 20 hospitals nationally.  MLive
  • Michigan-based Ada Valley Meat Company has recalled about 1,065 pounds of fully cooked frozen ground beef after a customer reported finding a metal piece in a package. The recalled items, with pack dates May 28+May 30 and lot codes 35156+35157, were shipped to multiple states including Michigan and should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.  MLive
