EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Parents have raised concerns that cellphones distract students, and the school board may limit their use in classrooms. Board President Torchio Feaster said discussions will begin in late September or early October + the move is aimed at keeping lessons focused. MLive
- ➤ Michigan parents face uncertainty for back-to-school lunches as the state’s K-12 budget remains unresolved following the July 1 deadline. Nutrition experts advise parents to pack balanced meals (including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein and healthy fats) and consider less processed options (if school meals are limited) to help students stay focused in class. - ➤ Ryan Bruder, Dexter Community Schools' director of instruction, was named assistant superintendent on Monday, Aug. 11 and will become district superintendent on March 1 as outgoing Superintendent Chris Timmis prepares to retire. The board approved his contracts and Bruder said he will meet with community stakeholders (he previously served as a principal at Beacon Elementary and worked with Ann Arbor Public Schools) to guide needed improvements in the district. - ➤ Ann Arbor City Council voted 8-2 on Aug. 7 to extend the contract with Philadelphia-based planning consultant Interface Studio to allow more time for further work on the city’s draft comprehensive land-use plan— the extension raises the consultant fee to $884K amid the ongoing debate about the city’s growth plan. - ➤ Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital lost its air conditioning overnight and had to divert ambulances and postpone planned surgeries—hospital officials said Monday that normal operations have resumed. MLive
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Michigan defensive back Zeke Berry is practicing both nickel and cornerback as he prepares for a new season—his coach said Berry will play inside and outside to keep his role flexible. Berry started games last fall and made his first interception while playing at nickel, showing his ability to succeed in different spots on the defense. MLive
- ➤ Michigan Wolverines added four-star quarterback Peter Bourque from Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts—he is the third elite QB in the 2027 class and his strong arm and frame are expected to boost Michigan’s future offense after a tough 2024 season. MLive
- ➤ Michigan Wolverines tight end Marlin Klein (17) from Germany has worked hard to improve his blocking and earn more playing time after a high-intensity training period with coach Steve Casula.
