- ➤ Two longtime downtown Ann Arbor businesses will close by year's end due to rising costs and fewer visitors. Downtown Home and Garden will close Christmas Eve—Kilwins Ann Arbor is set to shut its doors on December 31. ClickOnDetroit.com
- ➤ Kilwins Chocolate Shoppe at 107 E. Liberty St. in downtown Ann Arbor is closing soon—official plans have not been shared. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Amina Allen, a trailblazing educator at Saline Alternative High School and Ann Arbor schools, died on August 2 after a short illness. Her daughter Savannah Allen and local school leaders remembered her as a dedicated leader who built herself up and supported students despite many challenges. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Ann Arbor city council approved a resolution on Aug 7 to review marijuana rules after dispensary owner Raymond Somich said his Kings High store lost nearly one million dollars due to a rule that requires dispensaries to be 1,000 feet from K–12 schools — the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing and may recommend a temporary reduction in the distance to help new stores open — as part of the review. This action follows complaints that outdated regulations are hindering business operations. MLive
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Michigan Medicine sent postcards without envelopes that revealed sensitive health details on June 27—affecting over 1,000 patients. The research team stopped mailings and will review safeguards to better protect patient privacy. MLive
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Former Michigan coach Chris Partridge, fired in November 2023 for discussing an active NCAA investigation, was cleared when the NCAA ruled he did not try to influence a player—he now works as an outside linebackers coach for the Seattle Seahawks. MLive

- ➤ Michigan’s football program faced heavy penalties from the NCAA for a sign-stealing scandal that will cost it postseason revenue, fines, and probation.
