COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The nonprofit Library Green Conservancy is proposing to reimagine Liberty Plaza at the corner of Liberty and Division as a new public space with a green lawn and ice rink after voters repealed the Library Lane park plan on Aug. 5 — the proposal seeks to bring a welcoming outdoors area to the city.  MLive

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Kilwins will close its downtown Ann Arbor store at 107 E. Liberty at the end of 2025 after 42 years and is working with a new franchisee to open a new location in the city+ the company said it appreciates loyal customers and will share more details soon.  MLive

CRIME NEWS

  • Police reported on Aug. 18 around 1:30 a.m. that a man was seen peeking into a home on East Kingsley Street in Ann Arbor—three other residents also reported a suspect looking into their windows near the University of Michigan.  MLive

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ann Arbor officials set aside $1M for upgrades to Buhr Park Outdoor Ice Arena—approved by City Council with a $500,000 federal grant and matching city funds on Aug. 18—and also allocated $32K for repairs at Cobblestone Farm.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • On Tuesday, August 19, the Ann Arbor Planning Commission approved adding a four story apartment building with 22 units to Broadway Park West along the Huron River, which includes 973 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. The building will have 6 two bedroom units and 16 one bedroom units, with 18 set as affordable housing— part of a larger redevelopment that also features condos, a hotel and a riverfront park opening Sept.12.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan received NCAA sanctions for an advanced scouting scandal, with coach Sherrone Moore getting a two-game suspension and a future ban for the 2026 opener as the program took a fine and four-year probation and planned to appeal the ruling. The team is determined as it prepares for its season opener on Aug 30 against New Mexico—hoping to move past the sign-stealing scandal.  MLive
  • An NCAA report revealed that Michigan football and its compliance department had a tense relationship—compliance officials felt left out and the program often overlooked rules, which led to a 10-year order for Harbaugh and a three-game suspension for Moore. These sanctions are expected to affect the team’s play this season and next.  MLive
  • Forward Adam Valentini, a top NHL prospect for 2026, will join Michigan hockey this season after he opted out of playing with the Kitchener Rangers when he signed with them in June—his addition will be announced on Tuesday as the team prepares for an Oct. 3 season opening against Mercyhurst.  MLive
