CRIME NEWS

  • Michigan couple Paul and Christy Akeo, who were held separately for 32 days in a maximum security prison in Cancun starting March 4 due to a disputed $116,000 timeshare charge, have filed a lawsuit in Florida against Palace Resorts and its chief executive for defamation, malicious prosecution, and emotional distress—seeking unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Michigan Taubman College is renovating its Liberty Research Annex and Gallery at 305 W. Liberty Street as part of a long-term lease extension by updating its mezzanine, bathrooms, lighting and electrical systems, and the building will reopen in 2026.  MLive
  • Saline Middle School's start was delayed after testing found mold in some classrooms and maintenance teams installed dehumidifiers and air scrubbers; officials say students will begin Tuesday, Aug. 26 — further tests may prompt more delays.  WXYZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Scio Township will face nightly I-94 closures for resurfacing work as eastbound lanes from Baker Road to M-14 will close 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. from Monday, Aug.25 to Thursday, Aug.28—westbound lanes will close from M-14 to Baker Road on Sept.4 to Sept.5 and from Baker to Fletcher roads on Sept.5 to Sept.6 with alternate detours provided.  MLive
  • Ann Arbor drivers will face temporary road closures and parking restrictions as the University of Michigan student move-in ends Sunday, Aug. 24, and campus events will close key streets on Aug. 27 and Aug. 29. County roadwork in Scio, Ypsilanti and nearby areas — including both maintenance and construction—means drivers should plan alternate routes for the coming days.  MLive

  • Ann Arbor now has a new 19-story luxury high-rise for University of Michigan students—nearly 100% leased as classes begin this fall. The building, the tallest constructed since the 1960s—offers a heated rooftop pool, quartz countertops, and hardwood floors for modern living.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • MLive's Michigan football beat writers discussed the impact of transfers and freshmen on the Wolverines' fall season, naming Justice Haynes and players like Jamar Browder as key additions—each expected to bring more energy and touches to the offense. They said the new talent will fill important gaps and boost the team's performance in games to come.  MLive
  • Rod Moore has been cleared by doctors after recovering from a torn ACL and meniscus and has resumed practice in Ann Arbor. The Michigan Wolverines safety and team captain said he will return to play later this year—if his leg feels strong enough.  MLive
  • Senior fullback Max Bredeson said that rooming with freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood during preseason camp revealed Underwood's strong character and natural leadership both on the field and off, and he noted that the pairing helped him see the real person behind the helmet. He added that Underwood impressed during spring practices and is expected to boost the offense when the team takes the field on Aug. 30.  MLive
