COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Broadway Park West along the Huron River at 841 Broadway St opens on Sept. 12 with a DJ dance party from 5 to 10 p.m.—it will host Ann Arbor’s first-ever Bubble Fest with bubble machines, kids’ music and treats on Sept. 14.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan ArtsRx is a new clinical arts program launched by Michigan Medicine and the University of Michigan Arts Initiative to support mental health for students, UM affiliates and Ann Arbor residents through artmaking. The pilot study will have health professionals prescribe arts participation while a self-prescription service offers community events—an effort to connect health and arts resources.  MLive
  • University of Michigan researchers have developed an at-home skin cancer test called ExoPatch that uses tiny microneedles and a two-line strip to detect melanoma on mice. They will soon test the kit on human patients and seek partners and federal funding—aiming to offer a low-cost alternative to traditional biopsies.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan beat New Mexico 34 to 17 on Saturday, Aug. 30. The 14th-ranked Wolverines are underdogs for their upcoming Week 2 game at Oklahoma+ oddsmakers list them as 4.5 point underdogs on some books and 5.5 on others with a game total of 47.5 points.  MLive
  • Michigan's football team, led by quarterback Bryce Underwood, beat New Mexico 34—17 on Saturday in a season opener under coach Sherrone Moore and new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey. The Wolverines gained 452 yards in a game that featured many player rotations on offense and defense as they prepare for a top-25 road matchup at Oklahoma next week.  MLive
  • Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer broke a record with 392 passing yards in a season-opening win on Aug. 30 when his team beat Illinois State 35 to 3—he threw three touchdowns and ran for one. Michigan will travel to Norman on Saturday night at 6:30 for a game on ABC.  MLive
