EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ University of Michigan is gathering input on its next president through seven 90-minute virtual listening sessions scheduled for September — sessions are held on Zoom for faculty, staff, and students with UM credentials. The board of regents announced the plan on Sept. 3 to let UM affiliates join sessions organized by their affiliation. MLive
- ➤ A review of Michigan teacher pay data showed that full-time teacher salaries grew from $61,978 in 2014 to $69,068 in the 2023 to 2024 school year, with larger districts paying higher wages. Smaller, rural districts saw smaller increases, and the top district paid $87,259—linking pay to district size. MLive
- ➤ Ann Arbor Public Schools will stop free breakfast and lunch on Oct. 1—because Michigan lawmakers have not worked out a new budget—so families may have to pay for meals. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Washtenaw County Road Commission will build a single-lane roundabout—designed to cut crashes and ease rush-hour congestion—at the intersection of Scio Church and Zeeb roads in Scio and Lodi townships next year. - ➤ State Rep. Carrie Rheingans said state lawmakers will introduce bills in the next few days to protect due process rights by codifying habeas corpus and formalizing Miranda rights — measures designed to require state Supreme Court approval to suspend these rights — with support from local county and sheriff officials. - ➤ Ann Arbor voters may be asked in the November 2026 election to decide if the city should move toward public ownership of DTE Energy. Grassroots group Ann Arbor for Public Power announced it will collect over 5,000 petition signatures to get the question on the ballot—this move follows a tied vote at a City Council meeting. MLive
