- ➤ Buddy’s Pizza in Ann Arbor launched a month-long Dine to Donate event on Oct.1 and is offering two charity-themed pizzas—The Wolverine and The State Square—with one dollar per sale going to Ronald McDonald House families caring for children receiving medical treatment. The friendly contest between the local and Mid-Michigan chapters will run through Oct.25. MLive
- ➤ A new trailhead at TimberTown Park in Chelsea was dedicated on Sept. 30 to honor Captain Joel Gentz, an Air Force pararescue officer who died on a rescue mission in Afghanistan in 2010. His family and local officials attended the ceremony that also marked the start of key park improvements. MLive

- ➤ Ann Arbor Public Schools piloted a cellphone ban at Skyline High last school year and will soon test similar limits at other schools to reduce in-class distractions—teachers say students focused more while some expressed concerns about safety during emergencies. Officials explained that phones are kept on pocket charts that allow emergency access if needed. MLive

- ➤ Michigan lawmakers passed a stopgap spending plan that will fund state government operations until Oct. 8 so lawmakers have time to finalize the full-year budget. The bill now goes to Gov. Whitmer—she is expected to sign it soon—ensuring government functions remain uninterrupted. MLive
