COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The Ann Arbor District Library introduced its new groundhog mascot Akako G. Shins, who first appeared at the Game Over Gala in August and at other library events last weekend. The mascot will appear at future library events like Halloween and Groundhog Day — and visitors can get special stickers when they meet him. MLive
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Roman Karas, a senior at Washtenaw Technical Middle College, is developing a sports injury app as part of his dual enrollment—he will graduate high school next spring with an associate’s degree. MLive
- ➤ University of Michigan is planning to demolish the nearly 96-year-old Camp Davis mess hall at its Wyoming research station and replace it with a modern dining hall and classroom building if the Board of Regents approves the $9.2 million project tomorrow. The new facilities will have updated electrical and water systems and space for environmental studies with renovations scheduled for completion by spring 2027 — designed by Wyoming-based Krikor Architecture. - ➤ Recent reports show that the drought has grown in Michigan, with almost all of southern Lower Michigan very dry — 40% faces moderate drought and 8% faces severe drought across a band from the Thumb to Pentwater. Ann Arbor and Detroit received light rain last week, but experts say that only above normal rainfall before winter will ease the conditions. MLive

- ➤ At the University of Michigan, student Ethan King survived a near-death cardiac arrest last year and now teaches CPR with the rescuer who saved him — the two have trained hundreds of fellow students through their Cardiac Arrest Preparation program. WXYZ

- ➤ University of Michigan will ask the Board of Regents to approve a $3.5M investment for lease improvements at 1000 Victors Way near Briarwood Mall. The board will vote at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 16th in Flint—if approved, the 52,682-square-foot space will be renovated for several administrative departments with work set for spring. MLive
