Good morning, Ann Arbor. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 21st of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • County parks officials are gathering feedback on plans for a new two-story recreation center near Ypsilanti. The facility—built on the site of the razed Cheney Elementary School at 1500 Stamford Road—will offer pools, fitness spaces, and a climate resilience hub.  MLive

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The owner and pilot of a 1981 MiG-23 plane that crashed during an Aug. 13th Thunder Over Michigan air show at Willow Run Airport sued his rear-seat passenger, who maintained the pilot did not have the right to order the ejection during the engine failure.  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Michigan Herbarium and Museum of Zoology are open to visitors with advance appointments and free admission. The collections display preserved specimens such as whale skulls, century-old plants, and a two-headed trout (a fish that counts as two specimens) and offer a unique look at natural history.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • A national poll by University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital found fewer than 10% of parents say their toddler plays outside rarely and 60% report daily screen use. The survey of 710 parents in August shows many use phones and tablets for distraction due to safety concerns — nearly half hold their child’s hand when trying new challenges — which may limit more varied play.  MLive

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Ann Arbor’s Planning Commission approved a site plan on Oct. 16 for a 20-story, 313,000-square-foot affordable housing building at 350 S. Fifth Ave—set to include 330 apartments, ground-floor retail space, and a project cost of $220M. The development will offer more affordable housing options downtown.  MLive
  • The Lodi Township Board of Trustees approved the final plans for Arbor Preserve—107 luxury homes on wooded land near Ann Arbor—after a narrow 4—3 vote on Oct. 20. The Toll Brothers project faced local pushback but will now move forward.  MLive

SPORTS NEWS

  • University of Michigan will offer a nighttime tour of The Big House on November 2 at 4:30 p.m., where fans will visit the locker room, stadium club, tunnel, and field to play catch, try a field goal, and take photos on the 50-yard line. The tour includes a history presentation by Dr. Robert Soderstrom (tickets range from $40 to $70 and children under five are not admitted) to give participants a behind-the-scenes look at the famous stadium.  MLive
