Good morning, Ann Arbor. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 8th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City parks manager Josh Landefeld said improvements continue at Bicentennial Park as a splash pad nears completion and will open in spring. The project is a long-awaited upgrade for the community.  MLive

CULTURE NEWS

  • Joan Jett, a rock legend and longtime animal rights advocate, appeared on a PETA billboard at 700 W. Cross St. in Ypsilanti—urging Domino's to add vegan cheese to its U.S. menus; the ad stands less than a half-mile from a Domino's location and about 10 miles from its headquarters as part of a campaign that also offered free dairy-free pizza slices and made stock purchases. The effort calls for a more humane menu option and highlights that such cheese is available in other countries.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Powerful organizations including OpenAI and the University of Michigan plan to build several data centers in southeast Michigan, with a project in Saline Township scheduled to begin early next year after a settlement that contributed $14 million to local services. Local residents and environmental advocates remain concerned that the projects could harm land conservation and raise power demand—adding 1.4 gigawatts that may strain the electric grid.  MLive
  • Consumers Energy finalized a new rate on November 6, 2023 that shields regular customers from extra costs tied to high-power data centers used by companies like Microsoft, Google and Amazon. State regulators approved the measure, making it the first of its kind in Michigan to separate big tech power use from everyday bills.  MLive

HEALTH NEWS

  • U.S. Rep. Dingell and Governor Whitmer met with hospital leaders at Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital on Nov. 7 to address rising health care costs as many Americans saw their premiums for next year increase sharply— in some cases doubling— according to officials.  MLive
