EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The University of Michigan’s Camp Davis Rocky Mountain Field Station in Wyoming is being renovated to add a new dining hall and classroom building, with work set to finish by spring 2027 though the camp director hopes for November 2026 completion. Camp classes this summer will be held in Dillon, Montana—students will stay in dorms at University of Montana Western. MLive
- ➤ The University of Michigan spent a record $2.16B in fiscal 2025 on new interdisciplinary research initiatives — including Impact Institutes and Building Better Futures — even as federal research funding was cut and UM expects a drop in federal support next year. MLive
- ➤ Ann Arbor native Willis Patterson, the first Black professor at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance, died Oct. 22 at 94. He joined the university in 1968 and built a family-like bond with students while promoting Black music — his legacy continues to guide the community. MLive
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ More than 30 flights were canceled at Detroit Metro on Nov. 12 due to FAA flight cuts as air traffic controllers worked unpaid amid the shutdown—15 departures and 17 arrivals were canceled and 40 additional flights were delayed. Lawmakers are set to review a bill to reopen the government later, and further cancellations are expected today. MLive

- ➤ Emmitt Smith, the NFL legend, spoke Tuesday at Rackham Auditorium about the dangers of opioid abuse—recounting personal losses and urging young people to learn how Narcan can reverse overdoses. He joined Zac Clark and university experts to stress that quick action can save lives. MLive
