November 22, 2026 | 16K Hiking Challenge
(Approximately 10 Miles)
Our Train for the Trails series is BACK, and this November, we're stepping things up with a 16K hiking challenge at Waterloo State Recreation Area!
Train for the Trails is Hike & Dine's endurance-building hiking series designed to help participants strengthen their stamina, improve trail confidence, and prepare for longer, more challenging adventures. From Michigan's rugged trails to the mountains, forests, and national parks we explore across the country, this series helps us build the endurance needed to take on greater distances.
We'll be tackling rolling elevation, wooded trails, and uneven terrain while maintaining a steady, intentional group pace. Along the way, we'll take designated breaks to refuel, recover, and enjoy a packed lunch on the trail, similar to what we'd experience during longer mountain treks.
This isn't a race, but it's definitely a challenge! The goal is to push ourselves, build endurance, and complete the distance together. Afterward, we'll have the option to wind down with food and drinks at a nearby restaurant.
Every participant who successfully completes the 16K challenge will receive a Hike & Dine 16K finisher medal to celebrate their accomplishment and the miles they put in on the trails!
Sponsor My Steps: Every Mile Makes a Difference!
We're bringing back our Sponsor My Steps Fundraiser with bigger rewards and a fundraising goal of $3,000!
This fundraiser gives our hikers an opportunity to turn their 16K challenge into something that supports the entire Hike & Dine community.
Participating hikers can invite friends, family, coworkers, and local businesses to sponsor their steps through flat donations or pledges based on the miles they complete. For example, a $10-per-mile sponsorship equals approximately $100 for completing the challenge.
Funds raised will help provide :
• Hiker essentials: Water, trail snacks, electrolyte replenishment products, and other refreshments for Train for the Trails participants.
• Trail safety and support: First aid supplies, equipment, and resources used during organized group hikes.
• Community outdoor programming: Supplies and resources that help us continue offering free, organized hiking experiences.
• Future events and initiatives: Supporting special outdoor activities, community experiences, and the continued growth of Hike & Dine.
We're also bringing bigger rewards and recognition for participants who help us reach our fundraising goal! Additional details about fundraising incentives will be announced.
You don't have to hike to support the fundraiser! You don't have to donate to hike!
Hiking Requirements & Expectations
Our 16K challenge is designed for hikers who are ready to take on longer distances beyond our typical recreational hikes. Previous hiking experience is strongly recommended, along with the physical ability to complete approximately 10 miles over varied terrain.
This is an endurance-focused experience that requires preparation, commitment, and hours of physical activity. Participants are expected to maintain the group's pace, remain with our Hike Coordinators and trail support team, and take responsibility for their physical readiness.
As always, we maintain our no hiker left behind approach while encouraging everyone to challenge themselves responsibly.
Registration & Participation
The hike is FREE, and participation in Sponsor My Steps is optional! All hikers must register through our official website and complete the required participation waiver.
Additional event details will be shared with registered participants via email.
Ready to take on 16K with us? Come out with Hike & Dine on November 22nd as we challenge ourselves, build endurance, earn our finisher medals, and put our miles toward a bigger purpose!
